Can you tell us a little more about you and your background in community music before entering onto the Cornerstones Foundation programme?
Yeah! Well, I’ve been playing guitar since I was about six or seven and I loved music all through school, it was one of the only things I tried that really stuck and I felt really passionate about. I started lessons early on playing classical guitar but soon switched to electric. When I got to high school, I continued lessons with the guitar teacher there who was working for Community Music Wales at the time. He encouraged me to sign up for a multi-arts project Community Music Wales were running in collaboration with Arts Active. I loved the project it was what I looked forward to doing every year and I participated in it for 3 years running. Not too long after I left Cardiff to study Music at the University of Bristol where in my final year, I wrote a dissertation on the potential of music to be used as a tool for the promotion of wellbeing. During the final weeks of my studies at university, I completed Community Music Wales’ Tutor Training course. I did this because over the course of writing my dissertation, I became really interested in the connection between music, wellbeing and community and wanted to learn more about the field. When Ceri and Chris contacted me about the Cornerstones Foundation programme and asked me to apply, I felt like it had all come full circle and I was really excited about the idea of working on projects like those that made such an impact on me as a teenager.
Can you give us an elevator pitch of what your project was all about?
The Aqua Project was a series of four weekly music composition and production workshops which ran across February and March 2023. The project worked closely with a brilliant group of young adults with learning disabilities who attend the Inclusive Day Provision programme at Cathays Community Centre in Cardiff. The project aimed to help participants reconnect with nature and explore the links between the environment and creativity through sound – inviting them to make music inspired by the sounds of water and experiment with new creative technologies in the process. The Aqua Project fused the recording of sounds from nature with instrumental improvisation sessions to encourage participants to experiment with a different approach to music making that they might not have been exposed to before.
Leading on a project comes with many challenges, what for you was the biggest challenge you had to face to ensure your project met its aims?
I would probably say figuring out how to package and market my project. I had never really had any experience writing a press release or creating content to advertise the programme so it took me a while to write and create marketing materials that I was happy with and that I felt reflected the essence of the project. Now, I feel much more confident in my ability to package and promote my work.
I also battled with trying to fit all the equipment into my tiny car each week. Ha! Ha!
What was the most satisfying aspect of producing a successful project?
The most satisfying aspect of Cornerstones for me was definitely seeing it come to life and watching the tutors for the project work with the group so collaboratively. I feel very fortunate that I got to work with such an amazing group of people who were so curious and handled the more abstract nature of the project with ease. I loved watching them immediately start developing their own creative ideas and I really admired their confidence to be silly, try something new and take creative risks. It was such a rewarding experience and I’d like to thank the staff at Cathays for their support and our brilliant tutors Jack and John for all their hard work.
What would you change if you had a chance to go back and do your project over again?
I think if I was to do this project again I would have loved to do a more interactive session where participants recorded sounds of water that they created, like pouring water into cups and recording the sounds. Additionally, for two of the three writing sessions we split the group up into two teams. I did this because I felt they might work better in smaller groups and it might be too overwhelming for them if the group was too large. However, in the final session we all came together to work as one big group and it worked really well. I think if I were to do the project again I would have everyone together and then give participants some options to break off and do a short session on lyric writing if they wanted to.
What piece of advice would you give someone looking to break into Community Music and Project Management?
I would definitely say to just get involved and attend some training. CMW run great training sessions year round that are usually free and I would highly recommend signing up and trying it out if you’re considering a career in community music. Also, volunteering and shadowing more experienced tutors is a great way to see if it might be the career for you. I find that talking to people who are already working in the field that you want to break into is so valuable and can give you a better understanding of the industry more than hours.

Wrth gwrs! Wel, rydw i wedi bod yn chwarae gitâr ers pan o'n i tua chwech neu saith oed ac o'n i wrth fy modd gyda cherddoriaeth drwy fy nghyfnod yn yr ysgol. Roedd o'n un o'r unig bethau wnes a lynodd a rhywbeth yr oeddwn i’n teimlo'n angerddol iawn yn ei gylch. Fe wnes i ddechrau cael gwersi chwarae gitâr glasurol yn gynnar iawn ond yn fuan newidiais i gitâr drydan. Pan gyrhaeddais i'r ysgol uwchradd, fe wnes i barhau i gael gwersi gan yr athro gitâr yno a oedd yn gweithio i Cerdd Gymunedol Cymru ar y pryd. Ef wnaeth fy annog i gofrestru ar gyfer prosiect aml-gelfyddydol yr oedd Cerdd Gymunedol Cymru yn ei redeg ar y cyd ag Actifyddion Artistig. Roeddwn i wrth fy modd gyda'r prosiect. Dyna oeddwn i'n edrych ymlaen ato bob blwyddyn ac fe gymerais ran ynddo am 3 blynedd yn olynol. Ddim yn hir wedyn fe wnes i adael Caerdydd er mwyn mynd i astudio cerddoriaeth ym Mhrifysgol Bryste. Yno, yn fy mlwyddyn olaf, ysgrifennais draethawd hir ar botensial cerddoriaeth i'w ddefnyddio fel arf ar gyfer hyrwyddo lles. Yn ystod wythnosau olaf fy astudiaethau yn y brifysgol, cwblheais gwrs Hyfforddiant Tiwtor Cerdd Gymunedol Cymru. Y rheswm am hyn oedd, yn ystod y cyfnod pan oeddwn yn ysgrifennu fy nhraethawd hir, dechreuais ymddiddori'n fawr yn y cysylltiad rhwng cerddoriaeth, lles a chymuned ac roeddwn i eisiau dysgu mwy am y maes. Pan gysylltodd Ceri a Chris â fi ynglŷn â rhaglen Cornerstones Foundation a gofyn i mi wneud cais, roeddwn yn teimlo bod y cylch wedi cael ei gwblhau fel petai ac roeddwn yn teimlo’n gyffrous iawn ynglŷn â’r syniad o weithio ar brosiectau fel y rhai oedd wedi cael cymaint o effaith arnaf i pan oeddwn i yn fy arddegau.
Allwch chi roi disgrifiad byr o hanfod eich prosiect?
Roedd Prosiect Aqua yn gyfres o bedwar gweithdy wythnosol ar gyfansoddi a chynhyrchu cerddoriaeth a gynhaliwyd drwy fis Chwefror a mis Mawrth 2023. Roedd y prosiect yn gweithio’n agos â grŵp ardderchog o oedolion ifanc ag anableddau dysgu sy'n mynychu'r rhaglen Darpariaeth Dydd Gynhwysol yng Nghanolfan Gymunedol Cathays yng Nghaerdydd. Nod y prosiect oedd helpu'r cyfranogwyr i ailgysylltu â byd natur ac archwilio'r cysylltiadau rhwng yr amgylchedd a chreadigrwydd drwy sain – gan eu gwahodd i greu cerddoriaeth wedi'i hysbrydoli gan synau dŵr ac arbrofi â thechnolegau creadigol newydd yn ystod y broses. Roedd Prosiect Aqua yn asio'r recordiad o synau o fyd natur âsesiynau byrfyfyr offerynnol i annog cyfranogwyr i arbrofi gyda dull gwahanol o greu cerddoriaeth na fyddent efallaiwedi dod i gysylltiad ag ef o'r blaen.
Mae arwain prosiect yn dod â sawl her. I chi beth oedd yr her fwyaf y bu'n rhaid i chi ei hwynebu i sicrhau bodeich prosiect yn cyrraedd ei nod.
Mae'n debyg y byddwn i'n dweud darganfod sut i becynnu a marchnata fy mhrosiect. I ddweud y gwir doeddwn i erioed wedi cael unrhyw brofiad o ysgrifennu datganiad i'r wasg nac o greu cynnwys i hysbysebu'r rhaglen, felly treuliais gryn amser yn ysgrifennu ac yn creu deunyddiau marchnata yr oeddwn i'n fodlon gyda nhw ac yr oeddwn yn teimlo a oedd yn adlewyrchu hanfod y prosiect. Nawr, rwy'n teimlo'n llawer mwy hyderus yn fy ngallu i becynnu a hyrwyddo fy ngwaith.

Wrth gynhyrchu prosiect llwyddiannus, beth oedd yr agwedd oedd yn rhoi’r boddhad mwyaf?
Yr agwedd o Cornerstones a roddodd fwyaf o foddhad i mi yn bendant oedd gweld popeth yn dod yn fyw a gwylio tiwtoriaid y prosiect yn cydweithio mor dda gyda'r grŵp. Rwy'n teimlo'n ffodus iawn fy mod wedi cael gweithio gyda grŵp o bobl mor anhygoel. Roedden nhw mor chwilfrydig ac yn ymdrin â natur fwy haniaethol y prosiect yn rhwydd. Roeddwn i wrth fy modd yn eu gwylio nhw'n dechrau datblygu eu syniadau creadigol eu hunain yn syth, ac roeddwn i’n gwirioneddol edmygu eu hyder i fod yn wirion, i roi cynnig ar rywbeth newydd a chymryd risgiau creadigol. Roedd yn brofiad mor werthfawr a hoffwn ddiolch i'r staff yn Cathays am eu cefnogaeth ac i’n tiwtoriaid gwych Jack a John am eu holl waith caled.
Beth fyddech chi'n newid petaech chi'n cael cyfle i fynd yn ôl ac ailwneud eich prosiect?
Petaswn i’n gwneud y prosiect hwn eto byddwn i wedi bod wrth fy modd yn trefnu sesiwn fwy ryngweithiol lle byddai'r cyfranogwyr yn recordio synau o ddŵr y bydden nhw wedi’u creu eu hunain, e.e. arllwys dŵr i gwpanau a recordio'r synau. Hefyd, ar gyfer dwy o'r tair sesiwn ysgrifennu fe wnaethon ni rannu'r grŵp yn ddau dîm. Fe wnes i hyn oherwydd roeddwn i'n teimlo y bydden nhw’n gweithio'n well mewn grwpiau llai ac efallai y byddai cael grŵp rhy fawr wedi bod yn ormod. Fodd bynnag, yn y sesiwn olaf daethom i gyd at ein gilydd i weithio fel un grŵp mawr ac fe weithiodd hynny’n dda iawn. Petaswn i'n ail-wneud y prosiect byddwn i’n trefnu fod pawb yn dod at ei gilydd ac yna’n rhoi opsiynau i'r cyfranogwyr fynd i grwpiau ar wahân a gwneud sesiwn fer ar ysgrifennu geiriau os bydden nhw’n awyddus i wneud hynny.
Pa gyngor fyddech chi'n ei roi i rywun sy'n awyddus i ddechrau ym maes Cerddoriaeth Gymunedol a RheoliProsiectau?
Yn bendant, byddwn i'n dweud wrth rywun am gymryd rhan a mynychu rhywfaint o hyfforddiant. Mae CGC yn cynnalsesiynau hyfforddi gwych drwy gydol y flwyddyn, sydd fel arfer yn rhad ac am ddim. Byddwn yn argymell yn fawr eich bod yn cofrestru ac yn rhoi cynnig arni os ydych yn ystyried gyrfa ym maes cerddoriaeth gymunedol. Hefyd, maegwirfoddoli a chysgodi tiwtoriaid mwy profiadol yn ffordd ardderchog o ddarganfod a allai hon fod yn yrfa i chi. Rwy'nteimlo fod siarad â phobl sydd eisoes yn gweithio yn y maes yr ydych am ddechrau gweithio ynddo yn rhywbeth morwerthfawr ac yn gallu rhoi gwell dealltwriaeth i chi o'r diwydiant fwy na dim.
