Blending Science, Technology, Music and Media

Stats in Sound was an innovative education project, developed by Community Music Wales, with initial consultancy from Guy Evans. The project blended science, technology, music and the media-arts in a unique and ground-breaking way.

The project aimed to create an awareness of environmental issues, sustainability and self-sufficiency using ground-breaking music/sound and communication/media technologies. A core aim of the project was the representation and expression of these ideas by enabling participants to record and articulate what they were seeing and learning through the teaching of a wide range of media skills including digital photography, film-making and sound recording.

We promoted the concept of ‘The Internet of Things’ – showing the young people how they can be creative in their engagement with the environments around them. Through the course of the project, we explored and responded to the immediate environments of the participant's own Schools, the ground-breaking environmental/ solar and wind energy project ‘G24i’, the Welsh ‘Chilli-man’ Chris Fowler’s ‘Polly-tunnel’, as well as the diverse environments of the National Botanic Gardens in Llanarthne.

Using technologies including the internet and social media, Arduino and MAX/MSP we captured real-time, statistical information and data from the environment and represented it in innovative ways- fusing music and sound, photography and filmmaking, electronics and technology to build a wide-ranging and stimulating project with tangible outcomes and a real legacy for the participants. This project was funded through the Arts Council of Wales’ Lottery programme.

Cyfuno Gwyddoniaeth, Technoleg, Cerddoriaeth a’r Cyfryngau

Roedd Stats in Sound yn brosiect addysg arloesol, a gafodd ei ddatblygu gan Cerdd Gymunedol Cymru, gydag ymgynghoriaeth gychwynnol gan Guy Evans. Roedd y prosiect yn cyfuno gwyddoniaeth, technoleg, cerddoriaeth a chelfyddydau’r cyfryngau mewn ffordd unigryw a chwbl arloesol.

Nod y prosiect oedd codi ymwybyddiaeth o faterion amgylcheddol, cynaliadwyedd a hunanddigonolrwydd gan ddefnyddio technolegau cerddoriaeth/sain a chyfathrebu/cyfryngau arloesol. Un o nodau craidd y prosiect oedd cynrychioli a mynegi'r syniadau hyn drwy alluogi cyfranogwyr i gofnodi a mynegi'r hyn yr oeddent yn ei weld a'i ddysgu drwy gynnal gwersi mewn ystod eang o ‘sgiliau cyfryngau’ gan gynnwys ffotograffiaeth ddigidol, gwneud ffilmiau a recordio sain.

Buom yn hyrwyddo'r cysyniad 'Y Rhyngrwyd Pethau' – gan ddangos i'r bobl ifanc sut y gallant fod yn greadigol wrth ymgysylltu â'r amgylcheddau o'u cwmpas. Yn ystod y prosiect, buom yn archwilio ac yn ymateb i amgylcheddau uniongyrchol ysgolion y cyfranogwyr eu hunain, 'G24i', y prosiect ynni amgylcheddol/solar a gwynt arloesol, 'Twnel polythen' Chris Fowler, y 'Dyn Tsili’ o Gymru, yn ogystal ag amgylcheddau amrywiol Gardd Fotaneg Genedlaethol Cymru, Llanarthne.

Gan ddefnyddio technolegau gan gynnwys y rhyngrwyd a'r cyfryngau cymdeithasol, Arduino a MAX/MSP, llwyddwyd i gasglu gwybodaeth amser real a data ystadegol am yr amgylchedd a'u cynrychioli mewn ffyrdd cwbl newydd - gan gyfuno cerddoriaeth a sain, ffotograffiaeth a chreu ffilmiau, electroneg a thechnoleg i adeiladu prosiect pellgyrhaeddol a chyffrous gyda chanlyniadau pendant ac etifeddiaeth wirioneddol i'r cyfranogwyr. Cafodd y prosiect hwn ei ariannu drwy raglen Loteri Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru.
